When thinking about human rights activists we think about Nelson Mandella, Eleanor Roosevelt, but we never notice the other less known activist around the world. Luis Kutner was a human rights lawyer who practiced in Chicago for more than six decades. Mr. Kutner campaigned for a worldwide habeas corpus code so that any arrested person would be properly charged and, at the court's discretion, released on bail. He also helped found Amnesty international in 1961 which is an international non-governmental organisation whose stated mission is "to conduct research and generate action to prevent and end grave abuses of human rights, and to demand justice for those whose rights have been violated." and he also created the concept of living well. This story really inspired me because one guy made a difference in his community. I have always been fond in trying to make a difference in the world. I have joined many volunteer groups and try to help as much as possible. Kutner story of how he created so much for the State of Chicago especially his campaign for a world wide Habeas Corpus code shows that even one person can change something so big.
I like how you picked a Human Rights Activist who may not be well known across the Globe. It is important to acknowledge everyone's contributions, especially those who may not get the credit they deserve.
ReplyDeleteThank-You for posting about a not as well known Human Rights Activist, as up until I read your post I had not heard of Luis Kutner.
Like Jacob, I also liked how you chose a lesser known human rights activist. Your blog about him makes me what to learn more about his work. How did you first learn about him?
ReplyDeleteIt is very important to acknowledge human rights activists from all over. And even for something within the law. Without rights, we as humans are simply just flesh. Every part of us goes to waste from our talents to our spirituality. Luis Kutner is a truly inspiring person.
ReplyDeleteI like that you chose someone who was involved in work that he was passionate about and chose to help out in his community which the education that he already had. For some people doing good deeds is for that acknowledgement but Luis Kutner did it because of his passion to help people. Great choice for a human activist!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading this. I actually did some research on Kutner myself, and it is nice to see that you have too. A good choice for a human activist solely based on his contributions to the community. I am interested as to how you came across him.
